Hairspray can be an extremely difficult stain to remove, particularly from delicate fabrics like tartan. Fortunately, there are a few simple methods that can help you get them out. Before you start, make sure to check your tartan garment’s care instructions and understand how to treat it.

Method 1: Blot and rinse

The most important step to remove hairspray from tartan is to act quickly. The longer hairspray sits on the fabric, the harder it will be to remove. So start treating it as soon as possible.

  • Begin by blotting the stain with a clean, damp cloth. If the stain is still wet, make sure not to rub it into fabric, as this will only make it worse.
  • Once all of the excess hairspray has been blotted away, rinse the stain with cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Let the fabric air-dry or use a blow dryer to speed up drying process.

Method 2: Use a stain remover

If the first method doesn't quite do the trick, you may need to use a dedicated stain remover. Be sure to test any product you use on a hidden portion of the fabric before applying to stain.

  • Choose a cleaner specifically designed for use on fabrics and follow the directions on the label. Apply a small amount of the cleaner directly to stain, then let it sit for several minutes.
  • Use a damp cloth to gently scrub the area in circular motions until the stain is gone. You may need to apply additional cleaner and scrub a few times before the stain is completely removed.
  • Rinse the area with cold water until the water runs clear.
  • Air-dry or use a blow dryer to speed up the drying process.

Tips

  • Always read care instructions and follow directions to avoid damaging your tartan fabric.
  • Be careful not to scrub fabric too hard, as this could cause damage.
  • Be sure to test any products you use on a hidden area of fabric first.
  • Tools like a toothbrush may help to gently scrub away the stain.
