The first step in removing any stain is to identify it and determine which cleaning agent you should use. Hairspray is water-based, which means it can generally be removed with a combination of detergent, vinegar and warm water. Vinegar cuts through the hairspray's sticky residue and the detergent helps the stain lift from the fabric.
To start, turn the garment inside out and rinse the back of the stained area with cold water. This will help remove some of the hairspray that didn’t fully bond to the material. You should then create a mixture of warm water (not hot) and a laundry detergent that’s free of chlorine bleach. Submerge the T-shirt into this mixture and let it soak for approximately 15-30 minutes. After the stain has been soaked, gently rub fabric together and rinse in cold water. Inspect the stain after this process and if it is still not entirely gone, it’s time to try vinegar.
Mix equal parts warm water and white vinegar, and submerge the stained area. Let it sit for 15 minutes, then rinse it in cold water. The vinegar should help loosen the stain further. Re-inspect the garment and if it still has a faint stain, wash it in the washing machine using normal laundry detergent and the hottest water setting the fabric can handle.
Finally, hang your freshly cleaned shirt to air dry. Take a moment to admire your handy work - you did it!
