Removing Fresh Hairspray Stains from Scarves

If the hairspray is still fresh, you may be able to remove it with a few simple items. Start by blotting the stained area with a towel to remove excess moisture. Then, mix a solution of one part dishwashing liquid and one part white vinegar in a bowl of warm water. Soak stained scarf in the mixture for 15 minutes, then rinse it well with cold running water.

Next, apply a drop of rubbing alcohol to the stain and use a clean cloth to rub it gently in a circular motion until the hairspray is gone. If stain persists, apply a dab of liquid laundry detergent directly onto the spot and let it sit for 10 minutes before washing the scarf.

Cleaning Old Hairspray Stains from Scarves

If you have an old hairspray stain on your scarf, chances are it's going to be more difficult to get out. Start by filling a tub or bucket with warm water and a few tablespoons of dishwashing liquid. Soak scarf in the solution for 30 minutes, then scrub the stain gently with a soft bristled brush.

Once the stain has been removed, rinse the scarf with cold water and allow it to air dry. If the stain still won't come out, dissolve 1 tablespoon of oxygen bleach powder - such as Oxy-Clean - into a cup of warm water and pour it over the stained area. Let it sit for 20 minutes and rinse the scarf with cold water again.

Preventing Hairspray Stains on Scarves

The best way to prevent stains from forming on your scarf is to avoid spraying hairspray onto it directly. If you do need to use hairspray near your scarf, try wearing an old T-shirt around your neck and shoulders to act as a barrier against overspray.

You can also apply some sort of protective coating to the scarf, such as a fabric protector spray or even wax paper. These will help to keep hairspray from sticking to the fabric, making it easier to clean if you do accidentally get some on.
