The first step is to gently scrape as much of the hairspray as possible from the fabric using a dull knife or spoon. This will prevent the hairspray from sinking into the fabric and creating a more difficult stain. Take care and do not use anything sharp that may slice or damage the fibers of the fabric.
Next, blot the remaining hairspray with a clean cloth and cold water. Do not rub or scrub the fabric or stain may become worse. After blotting, apply a small amount of detergent to the stain and gently rub into it with the clean cloth. The detergent should help to break down the hairspray residue and remove the stain.
Once the detergent treatment is complete, rinse the fabric with cold water and let it air dry. If done correctly, the stain should have been removed. If it hasn’t, repeat the process until the stain is gone.
If the stain still persists, take the garment to a dry cleaner as soon as possible – they will have right equipment and products to get rid of the stubborn stain.
