If you’ve got a hairspray stain on a polo shirt, you’ll need some specific supplies to get it out. Start by gathering some white cotton towels, a laundry detergent, a stain remover, a cleaning cloth, and a bucket. You may also need extra items depending on fabric.
Start by blotting the stain with a damp towel, then apply a pre-treatment product to it. These products are usually available in any laundry aisle, and they make it easier to remove hairspray without damaging the fabric. Leave the product to soak the stain for a few minutes before moving to the next step.
Once the stain has been pre-treated, you can machine wash the shirt as usual. Use an appropriate detergent, and make sure the water temperature is set according to the fabric instructions. If it’s a lighter material, use cold water to avoid damage. For more delicate fabrics, hand washing is preferable.
When the shirt is out of the washing machine, examine the stain to see if it’s still there. If it is, apply a stain remover directly to the fabric, making sure to follow the packaging instructions. Allow the remover to work its magic for a few minutes, then rinse with cold water. Once the stain is gone, launder the shirt one more time.
Finally, dry the shirt on low or medium heat. If the fabric is too delicate for dryer, hang it on a clothesline outside or inside. Avoid direct sunlight when air drying, as this could cause the color to fade.
Hairspray stains don’t have to be a permanent fixture on your favorite polo shirt. With a little work, the fabric can look just like new.
