The first step in removing hairspray stains is to pre-treat affected area with a cloth dampened in equal parts white vinegar and water solution. Rub gently in a circular motion to loosen stain.
Once you have pre-treated stain, launder the headband in a washing machine. To ensure all traces of the stain are removed, use an enzyme-based detergent and wash the headband on a regular cycle, at the highest temperature recommended for the fabric.
Next, transfer headband to a clothes dryer and set it to low heat. This will help sanitize the headband, killing any bacteria that may have been left from hairspray.
Once the headband is dry, check for any stubborn residues that remain on the fabric. If needed, dip a cloth into the white vinegar and water solution, and then dab it onto the affected area to remove residues.
If your headband has a lot of elastic bands within it, you may need to replace them as they will have likely become brittle due to their exposure to hairspray. Visit your local fabric store to find suitable replacements.
