Hairspray is a great product to keep strands of hair looking soft, shiny and in place. Unfortunately, it can also leave behind unsightly stains on clothing and other fabric surfaces. If you’ve recently gotten hairspray onto your favorite hat, fear not! There are several simple ways to get rid of these pesky stains.

Removing Hairspray from a Hat: Step by Step

Step 1: Begin by brushing the affected area with a soft-bristled brush to help remove any excess hairspray. This will help make the cleaning process a bit easier.

Step 2: If the stain is still visible, then you’ll need to create a cleaning solution. To do this, mix together one tablespoon of dish soap with one cup of warm water. Once the solution is created, dip a clean rag into it and begin blotting stained area.

Step 3: After you’ve blotted the area several times, rinse the hat with cold water. Be sure to avoid using hot or warm water as this can cause the stain to set and become even more difficult to remove.

Step 4: Once you’ve rinsed the hat, blot the area with a dry rag or towel to remove any excess water. Then, allow the hat to air dry in a well-ventilated area.

Step 5: If the stain is still visible after air-drying the hat, then you may need to repeat the above steps. You can also try using a bit of white vinegar to pre-treat the spot before attempting to clean it.

Additional Tips for Removing Hairspray Stains

  • If the hairspray has already dried, try using a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and water to pre-treat stain before cleaning.
  • Avoid using hot water when cleaning affected area as this can cause the stain to set.
  • Cleaning agents such as rubbing alcohol, laundry detergent and baking soda can also be used to help remove the stain.
  • Allow hat to air dry in a well-ventilated area and avoid direct sunlight.
  • If possible, try to prevent hairspray from getting onto your hats in the first place. Consider using a spray shield or covering your hat with a towel when using hairspray.
