Although hairspray is a great way to hold your hair in place, it can also leave behind an annoying residue on clothing, including your garter. You’ll know it when you see it—an ugly yellowish or brownish grim covering your garter. It’s time to get rid of it!

Start With Soap and Water

To start, you should try to use soap and water to clean the garter. Fill a bowl with lukewarm water and add a small amount of mild detergent — make sure it doesn't contain any bleach. Put the garter in the bowl and allow it to soak for at least 30 minutes. After that, gently scrub the stained areas with a soft brush until the stain has disappeared. Finally, rinse garter in cold water and hang it up to dry.

Spot Test Any Stronger Cleaners

If soap and water didn’t do trick, you may need to try something stronger. Non-abrasive cleaners like rubbing alcohol, nail polish remover, and vinegar can be effective. Before you apply these products, however, you need to spot-test them first. Place a few drops on a hidden area of the garter and let it sit for a few minutes. If there’s no discoloration, it should be safe to use on the stained area. Apply product to the stain using a cotton ball, and consider using an old toothbrush to work it in. Let it sit for several minutes before rinsing thoroughly with cold water.

Do Not Bleach!

It’s important to remember never to use bleach on a garter. Bleach is extremely corrosive and can damage the fabric. Even if the garter isn’t damaged by the bleach, it will likely still be discolored, which defeats the purpose of cleaning it in the first place.

Prevent Future Stains

The best solution for hairspray stains on garters is to prevent them from occurring in the first place. Whenever you’re using hairspray, be sure to protect your clothing, including your garter, by wearing a cape or towel over your outfit. By doing this, you’ll ensure that your garters stay looking good.
