When hairspray comes into contact with the down feathers of a jacket, the alcohol present in spray will cause the feathers to clump together, leaving an unsightly stain. To remove this stain, you'll need to take a few steps.
Carefully scrape the stained area with a soft brush or a blunt knife to loosen the clumped down feathers. Don't press too hard or you may damage the fabric.
Once the clumped feathers have been loosened, start brushing the stain away gently until all of the clumps are gone. You may have to repeat this step several times if the stain is particularly stubborn.
After brushing the stain away, use a damp sponge to remove any remaining residue. Be sure to use only mild detergent and warm water. After sponging, rinse thoroughly with clean water and allow jacket to air dry.
If the stain remains, you may need to repeat the process several times. Don't use any harsh chemicals as they can damage the down feathers.
With a few simple steps, you can quickly get hairspray stains out of down jackets. Always use gentle detergents and avoid using harsh chemicals when cleaning down jackets as these can damage the fabric and feathers.
