To help lift off as much of the hairspray as possible, use a pre-treatment solution like dishwashing detergent or a commercial laundry pre-treater. Apply the product onto the stained area and work it into a lather with your finger or a soft brush.
Once the pre-treatment has been applied, place the fabric in a bucket filled with lukewarm water. Allow fabric to soak for 10 minutes to further break down the hairspray.
Once the fabric has soaked for 10 minutes, rinse it in cool running water to remove the pre-treatment solution. If any traces of hairspray remain, repeat Steps 1–3 to ensure that all of the hairspray has been removed.
Place the item of clothing in the washing machine and set to a moderate temperature. Use the detergent that you usually would. Be sure to follow the instructions on the product label regarding the amount of detergent to use.
Once the cycle is finished, take the item of clothing out and hang it up to air dry. Avoid putting it in the dryer as the high heat of dryer can set stains, making them more difficult to remove.
