Hairspray is a great way to hold a hairstyle in place, keep frizz at bay and add volume. Unfortunately, it can also leave a sticky, hard-to-remove film behind. Fortunately, there are a few strategies that you can use to get hairspray stains off of cotton denim.
Start by dampening the stained area with cool water. Avoid using hot water since this could set stain into your fabric.
Make a paste by combining equal parts of baking soda and water (approx. 1/2 cup each). Apply paste directly onto hairspray stain and work it into the fabric using an old toothbrush. Allow the paste to sit on the stain for 15 minutes.
After allowing the paste to sit on stained area, run item of clothing through a warm water cycle in your washing machine. If possible, set the spin cycle on low so that the fabric is not damaged. You may wish to add a small amount of laundry detergent to aid in the cleaning process.
If the hairspray stain does not come out fully after one wash, repeat the steps outlined above. It may take a few attempts to fully remove the stain.
Once all traces of the hairspray stain are gone, dry item of clothing normally. Avoid putting the item in the dryer unless the stain has been fully removed, as the heat from the dryer can set stain into the fabric.
In addition to the steps outlined above, you may find that using vinegar is helpful in removing hairspray stains. Soak the stained area in white vinegar before attempting to remove the stain with a paste. This can help to break down the sticky residue left by hairspray.
