Steps to Remove Hair Spray from Cotton Chambray

  1. Soak up excess hairspray. As soon as the hairspray stain appears, soak up any extra by blotting it with a clean cloth or paper towel. Don’t rub the stain; this could spread it and make it harder to remove.
  2. Pre-treat the stain. Place a small amount of laundry detergent on the stained area. Massage it in gently, and then let it sit for approximately 15 minutes.
  3. Wash fabric. After the pre-treatment, wash the fabric as you normally would. The stain should be gone after the fabric has gone through a normal water cycle. In some cases, you may need to repeat this step if the stain is still there.
  4. Inspect the fabric. After the fabric has been washed, look over it to make sure the stain is gone. If it’s still there, you may want to try spot treating with a stain remover or repeating steps two and three.

Other Tips for Removing Hair Spray from Cotton Chambray

  • Even though it’s tempting, don’t use a hot iron on the stain; this will set it in making it much more difficult to remove.
  • Always check the care instructions for your cotton chambray garment before applying any cleaning solution or laundry detergent; some items may be too delicate to apply these cleaners.
  • If you're still having difficulty getting the stain out after completing these steps, take the item to a professional dry cleaner.
