The first step in removing hairspray from a cotton canvas fabric is to scrape away as much of residue as possible. Using a spoon or butter knife, gently lift any hardened chunks off of the fabric. Be careful not to press too hard or you may damage the fabric.

Next, make a cleaning solution of one part white vinegar to four parts cold water. Soak a soft cloth in the solution and dab it on the affected area, being careful not to rub too hard. The vinegar will help to break down the hairspray residue and lift it away from the fabric.

After the vinegar solution has been applied, use a second damp cloth to rinse away the residue. Continue to dab at the stained area until the cloth comes away clean. Finally, allow the fabric to air dry.

If any residue remains, repeating the process will usually do the trick. If the stain is still there, try using a small amount of laundry detergent directly on the fabric. After a few minutes, dab with a wet cloth and rinse away the soap. Air dry again.

With just a few easy steps, you can get your cotton canvas fabric looking good as new. Put these tips to use the next time hairspray finds its way onto your fabric and you’ll have a worry-free way to remove those pesky stains.
