Removing Fresh Hairspray Stains

If the hairspray stain is fresh, dab the area gently with a damp cloth. The idea here is to blot up as much of hairspray as you can without further rubbing the stain into fabric. After blotting up the excess, pretreat the area with a liquid laundry detergent and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Then, machine wash the item with hot water. Follow up with a second wash with cold water if necessary.

Removing Set-in Hairspray Stains

If the hairspray stain has been there for a while, the process is slightly different. First, pretreat the area with a liquid laundry detergent, then run the item through a normal wash cycle with cold water. If the stain is still present after washing, rub a small amount of liquid dish soap directly onto the stain and let it soak for an additional 15 minutes. Run the item through a new wash cycle on hot water and check the stain. Repeat this process until the stain is gone.

Using Vinegar to Remove Hairspray Stains

If the above methods don't work, it might be time to try vinegar. Start by diluting one part white vinegar with one part cold water in a small bowl. Dip a cloth into the mixture and use it to blot the hairspray stain. Alternately, you can spray the mixture directly onto the stain and let it sit for about 15 minutes. Afterwards, sprinkle a small amount of baking soda onto the area. Blot the liquids up with a damp cloth, then rinse the area with cold water. Finally, run the item through another wash cycle using hot water.
