Tips to Get Rid of Hairspray Stains from Converse Shoes

If you love styling your hair with hairspray, you know that it can sometimes end up in places it shouldn't be. Hairspray can cause stains to show up on the canvas of your favorite Converse shoes, but don’t worry, there are a few simple techniques you can use to get rid of those pesky marks.

Removing Fresh Hairspray Stains

If you notice that hairspray has just landed on your Converse shoes, act quickly! Start by using a cloth or a paper towel to blot away as much of the spray as possible. Do not rub the stain as this will only make it worse.

Once you’ve blotted away as much of hairspray as you can, create a mixture of lukewarm water and a drop of dish soap or laundry detergent. Use a clean sponge to gently scrub the mixture over the affected area. Finish by rinsing the area with clean water and allow your shoes to air dry.

Tackling Older Hairspray Stains

If the stain has been on your shoes for a few days, use an old toothbrush to scrub a mixture of mild liquid laundry detergent and warm water over spot. Once you’ve covered the spot, let it sit for 5 minutes.

Next, rinse the area with clean water and allow your shoes to dry in a sunny area. If the stain is still noticeable after the shoes have dried, try using a liquid stain remover meant for fabrics. Pouring a small amount of the product directly onto spot, followed by dabbing and rubbing the area until the spot fades. Finally, rinse the area with cold water and allow the shoes to air dry.

Preventing Future Stains

Since hairspray can be difficult to remove once it has dried, the best way to avoid future spots is to take precautions when styling your hair. Take extra care when spraying the product so that it doesn’t fly over and land on your shoes.

You can also add a protective coating to your shoes. A transparent, water-based hairspray sealant will coat your shoes and help prevent a range of stains, including those caused by your favorite styling products.
