What You'll Need

  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Dish soap
  • Soft cloth
  • Hydrogen peroxide

Step 1: Absorb the Stain Before Treatment

If the stain is fresh, use a soft cloth or paper towel to absorb as much of the hairspray as possible. Blot the stain gently and don't rub or scrub, as this can cause the stain to spread.

Step 2: Use White Vinegar

The acid in white vinegar helps break down hairspray stains. Soak a soft cloth in a solution of equal parts white vinegar and warm water, then use it to blot the stain. Keep blotting until the stain transfers to the cloth.

Step 3: Use Baking Soda and Dish Soap

Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda with 2 tablespoons of dish soap and 1 cup of warm water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and dab it on the stained area of the coat. Let the solution sit for 10-15 minutes before rinsing it out with cold water.

Step 4: Use Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide helps break down hairspray residue, making it easier to remove from clothing. Mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 1 part dish soap and apply it to the stain. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse with cold water.

Step 5: Launder the Garment

After you have removed stain, it's time to launder the garment. Be sure to check the care label and follow the instructions provided. It's also important to air dry the garment, as the heat from dryer can set the stain.
