Hairspray is undoubtedly a hairstyle staple. But if you’re not vigilant, those tiny droplets of hair spray can land on your clothing and create unsightly stains that are hard to remove. Start by gently blotting the hairspray stain with a dry white cloth. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing the fabric as this can cause damage. Ensure that you use a white cloth as dark or brightly coloured fabrics can transfer dye onto the garment.
Mix one tablespoon of mild laundry detergent with a cup of tepid water. Dip the cloth in the solution and dab at the stained area to remove the hairspray residue. Be sure to rinse the fabric periodically to remove any soapy residue.
If stain remains after blotting and dabbing, then pretreat it with white vinegar. Spray the affected area with a white vinegar solution and wait for a few minutes before rinsing the fabric. This helps to break down the hairspray and make it easier to remove.
Once you have treated the stain with vinegar, place the garment into the washing machine. Select warmest temperature setting allowed according to care instructions and use your regular laundry detergent. Tumble dry the coat as you usually would.
Finally, inspect the garment and repeat the above steps if necessary. Once the stain is completely gone, your coat should look as good as new.
