As soon as you notice the hairspray stain, take the dress off and soak it in cold water. This helps to stop spray from settling into the material. Leave the dress soaking for around 15 minutes before proceeding to next step.
Mix 1 tablespoon of dish soap with 1 quart of warm water. Stir the mixture until it forms a sudsy solution. Submerge the dress in mixture and let it sit for at least 10 minutes.
Using your DIY stain remover solution, gently scrub the stain with a clean sponge or cloth. Pay special attention to any tough spots or areas of discoloration. Do not use too much pressure because it could damage the dress.
Once you’ve finished scrubbing the stain, rinse the dress with cold water. This will help to remove any residue from the cleaning solution, as well as any remaining hairspray.
To prevent any shrinking or warping, hang the dress up to air dry. Avoid using a dryer, as this could make the stain worse. You should also avoid direct sunlight as it could fade the colors of the dress.
If the stain persists, use a commercial stain remover spray. Follow the directions closely, and test the spray on an inconspicuous area before spraying it directly on the stain. Be sure to allow it to sit for at least 10 minutes before rinsing the dress.
If the stain still won’t budge, you may need to repeat steps above. Hairspray is a particularly stubborn stain, so you may have to repeat the process several times to completely remove it. Persistence is key here!
