The way to remove hairspray residue from barrettes depends partly on what barrette is made of. Here are four of the most common materials and how to clean them:
- Wooden barrettes : Mix together a teaspoon each of baking soda, laundry detergent and lukewarm water to form a paste. Rub the paste over the stained area and let it sit for five to 10 minutes. Then rinse barrette off with cold water, and dry it with a soft cloth.
- Plastic barrettes : Saturate a cloth with rubbing alcohol. Gently rub the cloth over the stains to remove the hairspray residue. If plastic barrette is painted, be sure to use a light touch to avoid damaging the paint.
- Velvet-covered barrettes : Blot the stained area with a damp cloth. Don’t rub, as this might damage the velvet. Dip a clean cloth in warm water and add a few drops of mild detergent (like Woolite). Gently blot the stain with the cloth, then rinse the area with another cloth dipped in clean water.
- Metal barrettes : Make a paste of equal parts vinegar and salt. Rub the paste into the stained area, using a soft cloth. Let stand for 10 minutes, then rinse the area with cold water.
No matter what type of barrette you’re cleaning, don’t try to remove the stains with anything abrasive. It could damage the barrette's finish, not to mention your own hands! Also, always test any cleaning solution, paste or rubbing alcohol on an inconspicuous corner before applying it on the whole surface.
Regularly cleaning your barrettes will help ensure they stay colorfast and looking their best for many years to come.
