Before attempting to clean the stain, use a clean absorbent cloth such as paper towels to blot up any excess grease or oil from the fabric. Be careful not to rub or scrub the material, as this can cause further damage. Work from the outside of the stain to the inside to avoid spreading the stain.
Mix a solution of warm water, laundry detergent, and white vinegar together and apply directly to the stain. Allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes. If the stain is particularly stubborn, you may need to let it sit overnight. This step should help loosen the stain and make it easier to remove.
If laundering the material, set your washing machine on the gentle cycle using cold or warm water. Do not use hot water, as this can set stain. Allow material to soak for 30 minutes prior to laundering. Use a mild liquid detergent and do not overload the washer with other items. Dry the material on a line or on the air cycle of your dryer.
If hand washing material, mix together a solution of copper or brass cleaner and warm water. Use a soft brush to gently scrub stain in a circular motion. Rinse area thoroughly with clean water and allow it to air dry.
Use a solvent such as mineral spirits or acetone to spot clean the stain. Apply the solvent with a soft cloth or cotton swab and dab gently. Be sure to keep the solvent away from other fabrics and surfaces, as it can cause damage. Rinse the area well with clean water and allow it to air dry.
