The first step is to prepare the area. Before doing any sort of cleaning, make sure you remove any excess dirt or mud that may be present on the shoe. You can do this using a dry towel.
Once you’ve prepped the area, begin by applying a small amount of dish soap onto affected area. Make sure to use a mild detergent like Dawn or Ivory, as harsher formulas may result in the color fading from your shoes. Once applied, gently massage the soap into the material and let it sit for a few minutes.
After the soap has had time to penetrate, begin blotting the stain with a dry paper towel. Make sure to not rub too hard, as this could cause the color to fade from the canvas. Once you’ve blotted the area, check to see if the stain is still there. If so, move on to the next step.
If the stain is still present, it’s time to grab an old toothbrush and give it a light scrub. This will help break up oil and grease and help remove the stain. When scrubbing, make sure to only use a light touch in order to avoid damaging the material.
Once you’ve finished scrubbing, rinse off the soap with warm water. Use a damp cloth to ensure you’ve removed all the soap residue. Be careful not to oversaturate the material, as this could cause it to discolor or even shrink.
Once you’ve finished rinsing off the soap, let material air dry for several hours. If stain is still present after all these steps, then repeat them until the stain has been fully removed.
