Step 1: Pretreat the Stain

The first step to removing a grease or oil stain from fabric is to pretreat it with a stain remover. Choose a stain remover specifically designed for use on oil and grease stains, as many removers are meant for other types of stains. Don't forget to read the directions on the package or can and follow the instructions.

Step 2: Use a Laundry Detergent

Once the oil and grease stains have been pretreated, pour a small amount of laundry detergent into a bowl of cold water. Submerge stained item in the mixture and allow it to soak for at least 30 minutes but no more than 4 hours. The longer material soaks, the better the chance of removing the grease or oil stain.

Step 3: Rinse the Fabric

After the material has finished soaking, rinse the fabric with cold water to remove any traces of detergent. Make sure to rinse twice, and check for signs of the stain before moving on to the next step.

Step 4: Apply Hydrogen Peroxide or Liquid Chlorine Bleach

If there are still traces of the grease and oil stain visible, apply hydrogen peroxide or liquid chlorine bleach directly to stain. Allow it to sit for 15 minutes then rinse the fabric with cold water. Be sure to check for signs of discoloration before applying, as some fabrics cannot withstand chlorine bleach.

Step 5: Dry and Enjoy

Once the stain is gone, hang the material up to dry. Depending on the fabric, you may also be able to safely put it in the dryer. When the material is dry, you can enjoy your newly cleaned tunic.
