The best way to handle grease and oil stains is to act quickly. Before you start washing, try to blot the stain with a paper towel or tissue paper to remove as much of the grease or oil as possible.
Once you’ve blotted away as much of the grease and oil as possible, it’s time to pre-treat the stain. You can make a paste out of two tablespoons of baking soda and one-quarter cup of hot water, and then use a brush or sponge to apply it to the stain. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse the item off with cold water.
For tough grease and oil stains, you may need to soak the item overnight. Fill a sink with cold water, add a scoop of laundry detergent, and mix until the water is sudsy. Place item in water and let it soak overnight. The next morning, drain the sink and gently rub the fabric together to help loosen the stain.
You can then wash the item in the washing machine on gentle cycle, using cold water. After the cycle is finished, check item to make sure stain is gone. If not, repeat steps 2 and 3.
Once the item is clean and the stain is gone, hang it up to dry. Do not place the item in the dryer, as this can cause the stain to set permanently.
