Before beginning any cleaning process, it’s important to identify type of material your sleep shirt is made out of. Generally speaking, the two most common fabrics for sleep shirts are cotton and polyester. Once you’ve identified what the fabric is, you’ll need to choose an appropriate cleaning solution.

Cleaning Cotton Sleep Shirts

For cotton sleep shirts, a mild dishwashing liquid should do the trick. Fill a sink with lukewarm water, then add a few drops of the dishwashing liquid. Gently submerge the sleep shirt in the soapy water, making sure stained areas are completely immersed. Let the shirt soak for 10 to 15 minutes, then rinse it thoroughly in cool water.

Once the shirt has been rinsed, lay it flat on a clean towel and blot at the stained area to remove as much of the grease or oil as possible. For remaining stains, create a paste of dishwashing liquid and baking soda and rub it into the stain. Let the paste sit for 15 minutes, then rinse it off with cold water.

Cleaning Polyester Sleep Shirts

Polyester sleep shirts require a bit of a different cleaning solution. Begin by mixing 1/4 cup of white vinegar with 1/4 cup of lukewarm water. Dip a clean rag in the mixture, then use it to dab at stained area. The combination of vinegar and water should break down grease or oil and make it easier to remove.

After dabbing at the stain area with the vinegar and water mixture, create a paste with dishwashing liquid and baking soda. Rub paste into the stain and let it sit for 15 minutes before rinsing it off with cold water. Again, you may need to repeat process multiple times to completely remove the stain.

Preventive Measures to Avoid Grease and Oil Stains

The best way to deal with grease and oil stains is to prevent them in first place. When washing clothes that are susceptible to grease and oil stains, such as sleep shirts, make sure to turn them inside out before putting them into the washer. This will reduce the risk of the stain rubbing off onto the shirt, as well as protect it from wear and tear.

Additionally, it’s important to note that high temperatures can set grease and oil stains into fabrics, so it’s best to wash the shirt in cool or lukewarm water. Air drying is also preferable to using a dryer, as the heat from a dryer can also set the stain.
