Pre-Treating the Stain

Before trying any of the methods below, make sure to pre-treat the stain. Start by blotting the stain with paper towels or a cloth to absorb as much of the grease or oil as possible. Do not rub or scrub stain, as this can damage fabric. After blotting stain, use a pre-treatment solution that is specially formulated for grease and oil-based stains. Allow the solution to soak into the fabric for a few minutes and then launder as usual.

Using Detergent and Water

If you don't have a pre-treatment solution available, you can try using a regular laundry detergent. Start by mixing the detergent with hot water in a bowl. Dip a brush or clean cloth into the solution and then gently dab the stain to work in the suds. Use cold water to rinse off the detergent and repeat until the stain has been removed. Make sure to use cold water, as hot water can set the stain and make it harder to remove.

Using White Vinegar

White vinegar is another effective way to remove grease and oil stains. Start by mixing a 50/50 solution of white vinegar and water. Dip a clean cloth into the solution and then dab the stain. As the vinegar breaks down the stain, use a scraper or a brush to gently loosen it. Rinse the area with cold water and then launder as usual.

Using Baking Soda

Baking soda is another handy household item that can be used to remove oil and grease stains. Start by making a paste with baking soda and water. Spread the paste over stain and let it sit for 15-30 minutes. Once the paste has had time to work its magic, use a damp cloth to gently scrub the stain away. Rinse the area with cold water and launder as usual.

Using Cornstarch and Soap

Another option for removing grease and oil stains is to use a combination of cornstarch and soap. Sprinkle a generous amount of cornstarch onto the stain and let it sit for 20 minutes. Using a damp cloth, work a small amount of liquid dish soap into the stain. Rinse area with cold water and launder as usual.
