Shantung fabric, first created in China centuries ago, is a fabric widely used in decoration. It has a somewhat rough feel, but this gives it its unique look and feel. Unfortunately, this also makes grease and oil stains one of its common enemies.

Steps to Clean Grease or Oil Stains from Shantung Fabric

  1. Blot the stain. Blot up as much of the oil or grease with a clean cloth. Do not rub the stain in — this can damage the fibers of your shantung fabric.
  2. Create a cleaning solution. Mix 1 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with 1 cup of warm water.
  3. Apply the cleaning solution. Dip a clean cloth in the cleaning solution and apply directly to the stain.
  4. Allow the solution to dry. Let the cleaning solution dry on the stain for several minutes.
  5. Remove the remaining stain. Take a dry cloth and lightly blot the spot in circles until the stain is gone.

Tips for Preventing Grease and Oil Stains

  • Pre-treat stains immediately. As soon as you notice a stain, apply a pre-treatment solution of 1 teaspoon of dish soap to 1 cup of warm water to the stained area.
  • Cover spills with an absorbent cloth. If a spill happens, place an absorbent cloth or paper towel over top to soak up liquid.
  • Use a cloth napkin when eating. Cover your shantung fabric with a cloth napkin when eating to avoid grease or oil marks.
