How to Easily Clean Grease and Oil Stains from Merino Fabrics

Merino fabric is a soft, natural fabric that is both lightweight and strong. It is popularly used to make t-shirts, sweaters, and other garments. Although the delicate fibers of Merino fabric can make it difficult to clean, oily and greasy stains can be removed with the right approach.

Step 1: Blot and Pretreat with Solvent

Start by blotting the area with a paper towel or cloth, being careful not to rub the stain in. Apply a solvent-based cleaner to the stained area, such as a grease-cutting dishwashing liquid. Allow the cleaner to sit on stain for 10–15 minutes.

Step 2: Launder in Hot Water

Place Merino garment in a washing machine and wash on the highest heat setting that is safe for the fabric. Use an enzyme detergent and add a half cup of white vinegar. To help loosen the stain, add a half cup of baking soda. Wash the garment as you normally would, but leave it in the water for an extra 15 minutes before the rinse cycle begins.

Step 3: Check for Stain Removal and Repeat

After the wash is completed, check garment for remaining stain. If it is still present, repeat these steps again. Do not put the garment in a dryer until the stain is fully removed, as heat sets the stain making it much harder to remove.
