Step 1: Choose Your Cleaning Solution

Depending on type of fabric, material, and cleaning agent you use, you will need to choose the best solution for your needs. For most light fabric linens, a mild detergent and warm water are often the most effective solution. If you’re unsure about what kind of cleaning product to use, consult the tag on the garment to ensure you don’t damage it.

Step 2: Pretreat the Stain

This step is essential to get rid of any greasy or oily remnants. Liberally apply cleaning solution on the affected area. Let the cleaner soak into fabric for at least 10 minutes before continuing to the next step.

Step 3: Wash the Garment

If your linen is machine washable, then use the hottest setting possible with an extra rinse cycle. If you don’t have a washing machine, hand wash the garment in a sink filled with warm, soapy water. Make sure to scrub the stain with a clean cloth as you are washing it.

Step 4: Apply a Specialized Spot Remover (Optional)

If the stain remains after the previous steps, you may want to try a specialized spot remover for tougher grease and oil stains. Be sure to read the instructions on the product before applying it. Leave the spot remover on for at least 10 minutes before washing.

Step 5: Dry and Inspect Garment

Hang or lay the garment to dry once you have finished washing it. It’s important to check to see if the stain has been removed before you put the garment back in the closet. Repeat these steps if necessary until the stain is gone.
