Hanbok are a type of traditional clothing that have been worn in Korea since the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). As with any kind of clothing, hanbok can become stained with grease, oil, and other spills. The good news is that you don’t have to put up with these unsightly marks on your hanbok for long—follow the steps below and you can have your traditional garments looking like new in no time.

Steps For Cleaning Grease and Oil Stains from Hanbok

  1. Start by laying your garment flat on a clean, large towel. Cover the stain with baking soda and let it sit for 30 minutes.
  2. After the 30 minutes have passed, scrub baking soda into the stain using a soft-bristled brush.
  3. Soak the garment in lukewarm water and detergent for one hour, then rinse with clean water.
  4. Treat the stain with a pre-wash treatment before laundering as usual.

Follow these steps and you should have no problem removing grease and oil stains from your hanbok! If the stain doesn’t come out after laundrying, or if it appears to spread, repeat the steps above.

Additional Tips for Stain Removal

  • Be sure to thoroughly blot any grease or oil stains before attempting to treat them.
  • If you don’t have baking soda on hand when treating the stain, you can also use a paste made from cornstarch and water.
  • Always check the care label on your hanbok before taking any action.
