Start by pre-treating the stain with laundry detergent and warm water. Work the detergent into the stain with your fingertips; you may also use an old, soft-bristled brush to give the detergent and water mixture a bit of an extra boost. Once the detergent has been completely worked in, let it sit for about 15 minutes.
Now, soak the gingham fabric in a mixture of one part white vinegar and two parts cold water for 15 minutes. After the soak, rinse the fabric thoroughly with warm water. Some stubborn stains may require a second application.
If the stain has not yet disappeared, go for a stronger solution: rubbing alcohol. Dip a clean cloth in rubbing alcohol and dab the stained area. Now, this is where you must be careful, as using too much rubbing alcohol can damage the gingham fabric by breaking down its natural fibers. Once you have applied the rubbing alcohol, let it sit for 5 minutes and then rinse the fabric with warm water.
For tough, deep stains, create a thick paste of baking soda and water and apply directly to the stained area. Let paste sit for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. As a final step, either air dry or lay flat and press with a clean, dry cloth.
With these steps, you can easily remove grease and oil stains from gingham! Just remember to be gentle while removing stubborn stains and always test any cleaning solutions on a small, hidden area first.
