Before taking action, the first step is to identify the type of grease or oil that has stained the twill. This will be important when it comes to selecting the right solvent or cleaner to use. Depending on the stain, different measuring steps and practices will need to be taken.

Step One: Pre-Treating the Stain

The pre-treating process should begin by using a dry cloth or brush to remove as much of the stain as possible. Don’t rub too hard, as this may make stain worse. Once surface of the fabric is dry, it’s time to apply a spot cleaner or a small amount of liquid detergent.

If the stain is from vegetable or cooking oil, an absorbent powder such a baking soda, baby powder, or cornstarch can be used as well. These will help reduce the stain and make it easier to remove. Apply liberally to affected area and allow it to sit for 15-20 minutes. Once the powder is finished doing its job, use a soft brush to gently brush away any excess powder.

Step Two: Washing the Fabric

Once you’ve pre-treated the fabric, it’s time to move onto the washing process. Place the item in a washing machine and select a cool or warm water setting, along with a low-temperature spin cycle.

When it comes to selecting the type of detergent, go for a liquid product as opposed to powdered detergent. This will help to avoid leaving any residue on the fabric. Always remember to check the clothing care label before washing to make sure you’re following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Step Three: Drying the Fabric

When the washing cycle is finished, take the item out of the machine and dry it using either a tumble dryer or, if possible, hang the item up outside in the sun. If you’re opting for the latter, leave it out until it is completely dry.

Putting It All Together

Following the steps outlined above should help you to successfully remove grease and oil stains from twill fabric. As always, when dealing with delicate materials, it’s best to consult with a professional to get the best results.
