Whether it’s a parka, a peacoat, a trenchcoat, or even a light bomber jacket, a stained coat can look like it’s beyond saving. Fortunately, there are several methods you can use to get rid of tough grease and oil stains. Here are three simple steps to help your coat look brand new again.
The first step is to cover the stain with talcum powder or cornstarch. Talcum powder or cornstarch work to absorb the grease or oil and bring it to the surface. The powder should be left to sit for about 10-15 minutes. This gives time for the powder to really soak up all the grease and oils.
After the powder has had a chance to do its job, you can use a brush or sponge to gently scrub the area. Aim for a medium pressure and be careful not to damage the fabric. The powder will eventually break down grease or oil, making it easier to remove from fabric.
Once you’ve scrubbed away most of the grease or oil, you can rinse the coat with cold water. Re-apply the talcum powder or cornstarch and repeat the scrubbing process if needed. After the stain is completely gone, be sure to air-dry the coat and then apply a protective spray to help repel future stains.
Getting rid of grease and oil stains on your favorite coat doesn’t have to be a daunting task. By using talcum powder or cornstarch and following a few simple steps, you can erase any stain and save yourself a trip to the dry cleaners.
