Step 1: Pre-Treat the Stain with Detergent

Start by applying a small amount of laundry detergent to the grease- or oil-stained area. Let detergent sit for five minutes. Then, use a soft brush or toothbrush to gently scrub at the stain, working the detergent into the fabric. Be sure not to scrub too hard, because this can damage fabric and make the stain harder to remove.

Step 2: Rinse the Detergent

Once you have finished scrubbing stain, rinse it with cool water to remove the detergent. Do not put the bandana in a washing machine until you have finished rinsing the detergent off, as the detergent can cause permanent staining if left on the fabric.

Step 3: Wash the Bandana

After you have rinsed off the detergent, you can put bandana in the washing machine. Use delicate cycle and cold water. If the bandana is especially greasy or oily, you may want to add some vinegar to the wash water to help break down the stain. When cycle is finished, check the bandana to see if the stain is gone. If it isn't, you can repeat steps one and two before washing the bandana again.

Step 4: Air Dry or Tumble Dry

Once the bandana is clean, you can either hang it up to air dry or put it in dryer. If you put it in the dryer, choose the gentle or low heat setting. This will keep the bandana from shrinking and any remaining stains from setting in.
