What You Need

  • Clean white cloth
  • Dry-cleaning solvent
  • Laundry detergent
  • Paper towels
  • Toothbrush

Step 1: Blot the Stain with a Clean Cloth

First, take a clean white cloth and place it directly over the grease or oil stain. Press down gently and dab the area repeatedly for a few minutes. This technique will help absorb the stain and lift it away from the fabric.

Step 2: Apply Dry-Cleaning Solvent

Once you’ve managed to absorb some of the stain with cloth, add some dry-cleaning solvent directly to the spot. Apply it with a clean cloth, and then let it sit for several minutes. Then, use your toothbrush to lightly scrub the area until the remaining stain starts to disappear.

Step 3: Rinse with Cold Water

Next, hold the stained spot under the tap with cold running water. This will help to flush the stain away from the fabric. But be careful not to rub or press too hard on material—this could cause extra damage.

Step 4: Pretreat with Detergent

Take a few drops of laundry detergent, mix it with some water in a bowl and apply it directly to the stain. Let it sit for a few minutes before using a clean cloth to dab the area and rinse it with cold water.

Step 5: Dry and Check the Results

Gently press a paper towel against the area, and if there’s still some of the stain left, start the process again until it is completely gone. Afterwards, hang the ball gown up to dry, and inspect the results.
