Removing Grease and Oil Stains from an Area Rug

  • Start by blotting the stain with a dry cloth or paper towel to absorb as much of the grease and oil as you can.
  • Mix ¼ teaspoon of dishwashing liquid with 1 cup of warm water in a bowl.
  • Dip a white cloth into the bowl and begin to scrub the stain gently.
  • Blot the greasy stain with the damp cloth and the dishwashing solution until the stain is removed.
  • Rinse the area by blotting it with clean, cold water.
  • Allow the rug to air dry.

Preventing Grease and Oil Stains

  • Apply Scotchgard to area rugs - this can help to repel oils and stains.
  • If the area rug is made of wool, use distilled white vinegar instead of dish soap when cleaning the stain.
  • Regularly vacuum area rugs to keep them clean and prevent debris from settling into the fibers.
  • Place rugs in high-traffic areas and be sure to move furniture around to even out the wear and tear.
