When removing a gravy stain from white tie, you want to move quickly and treat spot as soon as possible. While the tie is still damp, cover stain with a laundry pre-treatment product. Allow it to sit for 5-10 minutes to break down the proteins in the stain, and then rinse with cold water.
Once rinsed, submerge the tie in cold water and allow it to soak for roughly 30 minutes. This will help to further remove the stain.
Your white tie should now be ready to wash in a washing machine. Make sure to use warm (not hot) water. Select a mild detergent and the delicate cycle for the machine. Wash the tie on its own, as combining it with other clothing may cause additional problems or color bleeds.
If after washing the tie there’s still a slight stain, you may resort to using bleach to remove it. Mix one gallon of warm water with one teaspoon of chlorine bleach, and submerge the tie for five to 10 minutes. Once finished, rinse the tie thoroughly with cool water and lay it flat to dry away from direct sunlight.
Follow these three simple steps, and you can restore your white tie to its original glory. For maximum success, make sure to treat gravy stains as soon as possible and keep your washing machine settings to the gentlest cycle.
