What You Will Need

  • Cold water
  • Paper towels or a clean cloth
  • A mild liquid detergent
  • White vinegar
  • A soft-bristled brush
  • Washing machine (optional)

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. As soon as possible, soak up the excess gravy with paper towels or a clean cloth. This will help to prevent the stain from setting.
  2. Rinse the area with cold water, taking care not to spread the stain further. Rinse until the water runs clear.
  3. Create a cleaning solution of warm water and a mild liquid detergent. Mix the ingredients together before gently dabbing onto the stain with a clean cloth.
  4. Using a soft-bristled brush, lightly scrub the area in a circular motion. Take care not to rub too hard, as this could damage the fabric.
  5. Rinse the area with cold water to remove any residue of cleaning solution.
  6. To remove any residual stain, mix equal parts white vinegar and cold water. Dab solution onto the area with a clean cloth and allow to sit for 10 minutes.
  7. After the 10 minutes is up, rinse the area with cold water. If stain is still visible, repeat steps 4–6.
  8. If you wish, you can put the garment into the washing machine. Be sure to use a gentle cycle and a mild detergent.

Tips for Preventing Stains

  • Always check the packaging of the garment to see what type of fabric it is made of. This will determine which cleaning method is most effective for that specific material.
  • Always pre-treat any stains as soon as possible. The longer a stain is left on an item of clothing, more difficult it will be to remove.
  • Be careful not to dry your garment until stain has been fully removed. Heat can set stains, making them harder to remove.
