Gravy is one of our favorite comfort foods, but it can wreak havoc on our fashion statements. Spilled gravy can leave a tie looking stained and worn. Fortunately, there are a few easy ways to remove evidence and keep your wardrobe looking fresh.

Remove the Stain as Soon as Possible

Time is of the essence. The longer a gravy stain is allowed to set, the more difficult it is to remove. Immediately blot the stain with a clean cloth or napkin and then rinse the area with cold water. This will help to keep the stain from setting in and make it easier to remove.

Use an Enzyme Detergent

Enzyme detergents are specifically formulated to break down protein-based stains like gravy. Start by dampening the affected area with cold water. Sprinkle on the detergent and allow it to sit for around 3–5 minutes. Then blot the detergent away with a clean cloth and repeat this process until the stain has been completely removed.

Use Hydrogen Peroxide

If stain persists, you can try using hydrogen peroxide. This powerful bleach will lighten the color of some fabrics, so always test it on an inconspicuous area first. Once you’ve determined that the fabric can handle it, dampen the stained area with cold water. Apply a small amount of hydrogen peroxide directly onto the stain. Allow it to sit for 10–15 minutes before blotting it away with a clean cloth. Finally, rinse the area with cold water to remove any remaining residue.

Use Ammonia Solution

If all else fails, ammonia solution is your final resort. It’s a strong alkaline cleaner that can break down even toughest of stains. As with the previous solutions, dampen the stained area first and then apply a small amount of ammonia solution directly on the stain. Allow it to sit for no more than 15 minutes before blotting it away with a clean cloth. Rinse the area with cold water once you’re finished.

Seek Professional Help

If all of these home remedies fail to remove the stain, you can always turn to a professional dry cleaner. They have the experience and equipment necessary to effectively remove even the toughest of stains. Be sure to provide your dry cleaner with as much detail as possible about the stain and the tie itself.
