Whether it's an accidental spillage at a dinner party, or your kids’ penchant for dripping sauces, there is nothing more off-putting than gravy stains on your clothing. Nothing takes away from the polished look of a J Crew ensemble quite like an unwanted stain. To help you keep your J Crew collection looking its best, here's how to clean gravy stains from the fabric.
Pre-Clean
- Be sure to act quickly: the sooner you begin treating the stain, the better the chances of successful removal.
- If possible, scrape off any excess gravy from the fabric using a dull knife or spoon.
- Do not rub the affected area. This may cause the stain to spread or set even deeper into the fabric fibers.
- Depending on the type of fabric, blot the area with a damp cloth, or pre-treat the stained area using spot cleaner or liquid detergent.
Washing Machine
- Read the manufacturer care instructions for your garment to ensure it is machine washable.
- Treat stained area with a stain remover prior to washing.
- Use a detergent specifically designed for washing delicates.
- Run the garment on a gentle cycle, using cold water.
- Once the cycle has completed, inspect stain. If it is still present, repeat the above steps.
Hand Washing
- Fill a basin with lukewarm water. Ensure the water is not too hot, as this could cause the stain to set permanently.
- Add a few drops of delicate laundry detergent to the water.
- Soak the stained garment in soapy water for up to 30 minutes.
- Gently agitate fabric in the water, being careful not to rub it in case any residue remains.
- Rinse the item in cool water and inspect the stain. If it remains, repeat the process.
Drying
- Lay the garment flat on a towel, away from direct heat.
- Allow fabric to air dry. Do not place the item in a clothes dryer, as heat will cause the stain to set permanently.
