As soon as possible, blot as much of the excess gravy as possible with a paper towel or soft cloth. Don’t rub gravy into the fabric, as this will make the stain harder to remove. Instead, gently press the paper towel or cloth onto the stain, moving it around until all of the excess gravy has been absorbed.
Using a pre-treatment solution (which you can buy in any grocery or convenience store), saturate the area of the stain that remains. You can also make your own pre-treatment solution at home using a mixture of equal parts water and white vinegar. Allow the solution to sit on the stained area for at least five minutes before proceeding.
Once the pre-treatment solution has had time to set into the stain, place the garment into the washer. Be sure to use cold water and a gentle cycle, as this will help preserve the structure of the fabric. Additionally, use a mild laundry detergent rather than a harsher one, as this will be less harsh on fabric.
After the cycle is complete, hang the garment up to dry. Do not put it into dryer, as this can set the stain and make it more difficult or impossible to remove. Allow garment to fully air dry before inspecting stain.
Once the garment is completely dry, examine it for any lingering traces of stain. If the stain has been removed, you’re done—woo hoo! If not, you may need to repeat the process until the stain is gone.
