Washable Jackets

If your down jacket is washable, you’ll have the easiest time cleaning it. Start by blotting the stain to remove as much of the grease as possible. Then, wet the stain using a damp cloth. Use a mild detergent to create a lather on the stained area and gently rub the fabric together. Rinse out the detergent and then leave the jacket to air dry.

Non-washable Jackets

For non-washable jackets, you’ll need to use a different approach. Start by blotting off the excess gravy with paper towels. Then, mix a solution of white vinegar with warm water and use a clean cloth to dab the stain. Once the stain is soaked and treated, blot it with a dry cloth to help it dry faster. Keep repeating this process until the stain is removed.

Preventing Grease & Stain Build Up

It can be hard to resist the temptation to wear a beloved down jacket again and again, but the truth is that too much wear can result in grease and stain buildup. To avoid this, try to limit the number of times you wear same jacket without washing it. Consider rotating between two or three jackets so you always have one to wear while the other is being laundered.

It is also important to hang your down jacket up after wearing it to help it cool down. Heat can cause the grease and dirt to set into the jacket, making it much tougher to clean. Hanging it up also helps the feathers from becoming matted down, which can decrease the jacket’s insulation.
