The first step is to act quickly when stain occurs. If possible, use a white cloth to blot up as much of the excess gravy as you can. Avoid rubbing or scrubbing as this may spread the stain further into the fabric.

Once you have removed as much of the excess gravy as possible, spray the area with diluted detergent. For larger stains, you may need to let the detergent sit on the area for several minutes before rinsing with cool water. Do not over saturate the fabric as this can cause further damage.

If the stain is still present after rinsing, you can try treating it with ammonia. Mix together equal parts of water and ammonia and, using a cotton ball, dab the solution onto affected area, taking care not to rub or scrub. Rinse the area with cold water and inspect the results.

For deeper or set-in stains, you may need to repeat process several times. Once you are satisfied that stain has been removed, air dry the fabric. Do not put cotton canvas in the dryer.

Cleaning gravy stains from cotton canvas doesn't have to be a daunting task. With a few simple steps, you can have your favorite items looking as good as new in no time.
