Gather Your Supplies

You will need access to a few simple supplies to effectively remove gravy stains from your rug:

  • Liquid laundry detergent
  • White vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • Clean cloths (preferably white)

Removing the Stain with Detergent

Begin by blotting up any excess gravy with a clean cloth. Move outward from the edges of the stain, avoiding the urge to rub or scrub as this can cause the stain to spread. Once you have blotted up as much of the gravy as possible, apply a small amount of liquid laundry detergent to the stain. Use a clean cloth to gently work the detergent into the stain. Try not to scrub too hard, as this may damage your rug's fibers. Let detergent sit for a few minutes, then rinse the area with warm water.

Removing the Stain with Vinegar

If the stain remains after using detergent, you can try using white vinegar to remove it. Mix equal parts white vinegar and warm water in a bowl, then apply the mixture to stain using a clean cloth. Let the mixture sit for several minutes, then rinse with warm water. Repeat as needed until the stain is gone.

Removing the Stain with Baking Soda

If neither detergent nor vinegar are effective at removing the stain, try using baking soda. Make a paste by mixing together three parts baking soda and one part water. Apply the paste to the stain and let it sit for a few minutes. Blot up any remaining moisture, then vacuum up the baking soda. Repeat the process until the stain is gone.
