What You'll Need

  • Liquid dish detergent or stain remover
  • Clean white cloths
  • Mild laundry detergent

Removing Fresh Stains

If the gravy stain is still wet, then dab stained area with a clean white cloth. Don't rub too hard, as that could spread the stain. Once you've blotted up as much of the gravy as possible, apply a generous amount of liquid dish detergent or stain remover directly onto the spot. Gently rub the detergent into the fabric using your fingers. Rinse the garment with cool water and check to see if the stain is gone. If it's still there, repeat the process.

Removing Dried Stains

If the gravy stain has already dried, then first scrape off any pieces that you can, being careful not to run the stain deeper into the fabric. Place the garment in a sink or bowl filled with cold water and a capful of mild laundry detergent. Let the garment soak for 30 minutes and then gently massage affected area. Allow garment to soak for another 30 minutes, then rinse well. Again, check the garment to see if the stain is gone. Repeat the soaking process if necessary.

Additional Tips

  • Always spot-test any cleaner or detergent on an inconspicuous area of the fabric first before applying to the entire stain.
  • For tougher stains, apply a few drops of vinegar before the detergent.
  • Don't put your garment in the dryer until you're sure the stain is gone.
