Grass stains

Getting grass stains on your child's school uniform is an inevitable occurrence when they're running around and playing sports. As a parent, you may feel overwhelmed by the task of removing grass stains from their uniform. Fortunately, it isn't impossible to remove these stubborn marks and keep your student presentable.

What You'll Need

To get started, you'll need a few things:

  • Detergent or stain remover specifically designed for fabrics
  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • An old toothbrush

Step-by-Step Process

  1. Check the care label on your child's uniform to make sure that the detergent you plan to use won't damage the fabric.
  2. Conduct a spot test of the detergent or stain remover on an inconspicuous area of the uniform to make sure it won't cause discoloration.
  3. Remove as much of the grass as possible by hand and make sure you don't rub the stain further in.
  4. Create a cleaning solution of one tablespoon of liquid laundry detergent and one tablespoon of white vinegar to one quart of lukewarm water.
  5. Use an old toothbrush or a soft cloth to gently scrub the affected area with the cleaning solution. Avoid rubbing the garment in a circular motion.
  6. Rinse the uniform with cold water to remove cleaning solution.
  7. If there is still a stain after rinsing, mix baking soda with cold water to create a paste. Rub the paste into the fabric using an old toothbrush or soft cloth.
  8. Let the paste sit for at least 15 minutes.
  9. Rinse the uniform with cold water to remove the paste.
  10. Repeat the process until the stain is completely gone.
  11. Wash uniform according to the care label.

Tips & Tricks

  • Always use cold water when removing a grass stain.
  • Never place the stained uniform into a dryer as heat can set the stain permanently.
  • The sooner you can try to remove a grass stain, the better the results will be.
