Grass stains

Step 1: Pre-treat the Stain

Before you attempt to wash affected clothing, it’s important to pre-treat the stain. This will help to break down the grassy residue and make it easier to clean when you eventually put it in the washing machine.

Start by soaking the item of clothing in a mixture of cold water and a mild detergent for around half an hour. While the clothing is soaking, mix together some white vinegar and baking soda to create a paste. Apply the paste to stained area, using an old toothbrush to work it in, and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing with cold water.

Step 2: Launder the Clothing in Washing Machine

Transfer the clothing over to washing machine, using a gentle cycle setting with cold water and a mild detergent.

Once complete, check that the stain has been removed. If not, repeat the same process again.

Step 3: Air-dry

Once the clothing is clean, you should always avoid tumble drying and opt instead for air-drying. This reduces the risk of shrinkage or any damage to the fabric.

Additional Tips

  • When pre-treating stain, test vinegar/baking soda paste on an inconspicuous area first to check there is no discoloration.
  • If the stain is particularly stubborn, use a soft brush and scrub gently.
  • Handwashing can be gentler than the washing machine, but it won't be as effective at removing embedded grass stains.
