Grass Stain Removal from Gingham: Forget the Old Wives Tale, Here's How it's Done

Few things can ruin a summer picnic or outdoor gathering faster than accidentally spilling a glass of lemonade or a plate of bbq on a gingham tablecloth. The distinctive small-scale check pattern of gingham fabric is a timeless classic for dining tables, but when it comes to its propensity for grass stains, it can be particularly challenging.

Grass stains

When grass stain removal is called for, don’t despair. With some simple laundry room know-how, you too can return your gingham back to its original glory.

What You'll Need

  • Laundry detergent (powder or liquid)
  • White vinegar
  • Stain remover
  • Soft bristled toothbrush
  • Bucket of cold water

Soak the Stain

The first step in any stain removal process is to soak the stained fabric in cold water as soon as possible. If the clothing item or tablecloth is not washable, fill a bucket with cold water and stir in a capful of laundry detergent.

Once the soapy water is ready, submerge the stained area and allow it to sit for at least an hour.

Create a Past

Next, mix some detergent with warm water and stir until it forms a paste. Use either powder or liquid detergent, whichever you have on hand. Apply this paste to the stained area, using a soft-bristled brush to work it into the fabric.

Let the paste work its magic for at least 15 minutes before rinsing the area with cold water.

Vinegar's Turn

Once the area has been rinsed, fill a separate bucket with one gallon of white vinegar and one quart of cold water. Immerse the stained area in the solution and allow it to soak for about 30 minutes.

After 30 minutes, rinse the area with cold water and allow it to air-dry.

Tackle Stubborn Stains

If the grass stain still remains, pick up a commercial stain remover from the store. Prior to using it, read the instructions carefully, as all products vary.

Most stain removers require that you apply the product directly to the stained area and allow it to sit for a few minutes before laundering.

A Note on Gingham

Gingham fabric is typically cotton or synthetically manufactured, making it machine-washable. Check the care label on your gingham tablecloth before attempting to clean it.

Additionally, it’s important to keep in mind that machine-washing may reduce the vibrancy of the color. For this reason, it’s best to conduct spot cleaning whenever possible.
