Tackle Stubborn Grass Stains and Keep Your Dress Looking Fresh

It happens to the best of us: a grass stain on your favorite dress. Whether it’s from a picnic or a walk in the park, you need to act fast to ensure that your dress will stay looking good for years to come.

Don’t fret—cleaning a grass stain isn’t hard, but it does require the right process and ingredients. Start by gently dabbing at the spot with a damp cloth and then work through the steps below.

Step 1: Prepare the Solution

Mix one teaspoon of liquid dishwashing detergent with two cups of warm water. Do not use a laundry detergent; these will not be effective.

Step 2: Test on an Unseen Area

Before beginning to clean the grass stain, test solution on a hidden area of the dress, such as inside a pocket. Make sure fabric can withstand the detergent and any bleaching agents that you may use. If the fabric doesn’t react negatively to solution, move on to Step 3.

Step 3: Pre-Treat the Stain

Gently dab a few drops of the soap solution onto the grass stain. You don’t need to saturate the fabric; just enough to wet the stain. Let the solution sit on the stain for 15 minutes.

Step 4: Remove the Stain

Using a soft-bristled brush, scrub at the spot gently with circular motions. Once the stain is loosened, rinse the dress with cold water and check the stain. Repeat steps 3 and 4 until the stain is gone. If the stain remains, you may need to try more powerful measures.

Step 5: Bleach, if Necessary

If the stain still won’t budge, it’s time to resort to bleach. Mix one part chlorine bleach with five parts of water and apply to the stain with a soft cloth. Let this sit for no more than five minutes and then rinse with cold water. Be warned—chlorine bleach may lighten colored fabrics, so proceed with caution.

With a bit of patience and the right ingredients, you can kiss those grass stains goodbye and keep your dress looking as good as new.
