Before you start cleaning, take a minute to identify the type of glue you have on your dress. Solvent-based glues like rubber cement can be cleaned up with rubbing alcohol, while water-based glues like Elmer’s glue require a different method.
The next step is to gently scrape away as much of the glue as possible. Using a dull butter knife or credit card, scrape away at glue until most of it is removed. It’s important to do this gently to avoid damaging the fabric.
Once bulk of the glue has been scraped away, pretreat the area with a presoak. If the glue is water-based, mix one part dish soap with two parts warm water and use a soft cloth to rub the mixture into the stain. Let presoak sit for 15 minutes before washing.
After the presoak, machine wash your garment on the delicate cycle in cold water. Use a mild detergent, and add a small amount of white vinegar to the wash cycle. This will help remove any remaining stains.
Once the garment is washed, air dry it. Avoid using the dryer, as the heat can set the stains and make them much harder to remove.
