Satin is a delicate yet beautiful fabric that is used to make everything from bridal gowns to bedding. Unfortunately, it’s also prone to getting stains which can be difficult to remove. Glue is one of the most stubborn stains to remove, but with the right techniques, you can get it out.
The best way to remove wet glue from satin fabric is to act quickly. The longer glue sits, the harder it will be to get out. Start by scraping away as much of glue as you can using a spoon or a butter knife. Then, saturate the area with a cleaning solvent such as rubbing alcohol or acetone. Let the solvent work for a few minutes before blotting the spot with a cloth. You can also use dish soap mixed with warm water to remove stubborn stains. Rub the area gently with a scrub brush or damp cloth and then rinse with cold water. Finally, lay the fabric flat in sun and let it dry completely.
If glue has had time to dry, you’ll need to use a more aggressive method. Start by scraping off any excess glue with a spoon or a butter knife. Then, saturate area with a pre-wash stain remover or a mixture of baking soda and water. Let this soak in for at least 15 minutes before rinsing with cold water. Next, sprinkle the area with talcum powder or cornstarch and let it sit for an hour or so to absorb the moisture. Finally, vacuum the powder away with a soft-bristled brush and hand wash the area with detergent and warm water. Hang the fabric up to air dry and inspect for any residual glue. If the stain persists, treat it with a pre-wash stain remover and repeat the process.
There are a few measures you can take to prevent glue from staining your satin fabric in the future. First, when dealing with crafts or other projects that involve glue, always use a scrap of fabric to test glue before applying it directly to the item you are working with. Secondly, turn the fabric inside out so that any glue that gets on it will be less visible and easier to remove. Finally, handle the fabric gently and use protective gloves or a barrier such as parchment paper to protect your hands from getting sticky.
